Let me check the serious shit right at the front: the Harvey Weinstein story and related matters have been the thing I’ve simultaneously avoided and read all about over the last few days. In my chats with female friends this week, we’ve shared our own stories of harassment. While it saddens me greatly, it also makes me optimistic that the public response in recent years to predatory men in positions of power has been very vocal and strongly against, with real consequences to follow—minus the really big one sitting in the White House, of course.
Another roller coaster of a week.
There’s a song on the next Aloud record that deals with this subject matter. It came about when the Cosby scandal broke (the latest one anyway). We had to write about this issue and I’m looking forward to sharing it with you.
My parents left town last week and I spent a couple of days playing catch up. 100 emails, holiday plane tickets purchased, housekeeping etc. Thursday was a real treat, since it got us back into the songwriting swing of things. We met up with Hal Cragin to see what might come out of a couple of hours writing together. Hal has written songs with Joni Mitchell and Iggy Pop, so we were pretty excited. We chatted for a bit and got on real well. Hal, as it turns out, is a big Beatles fan and a Boston guy, so we had a lot of common background. You never know what may happen at these writing sessions, but it was a real big buzz. We all felt good about the tune and I got home feeling pretty accomplished for the day.
Pretty low-key otherwise. I’ve had a sprained toe for two weeks now, so I figured it might be good to take it easy this week. Stay off it and ice it. Charles came over and helped us with a little home improvement on Saturday. We rearranged the living room while my parents were in town, but still needed to mount the TV. Jen and Henry are no good at that stuff, but luckily our best friend Charles is.
Following that, we made a stop at our neighborhood’s block party and met some very cool neighbors, pet some chill dogs, ate some good food. Can I tell you how much I love living in Beachwood Canyon?
Woke up Sunday to find Aloud had been featured on Saturday’s Go Get ‘Em TV program in Germany. That was rather fun. Thanks to Harald for having us on!
I stayed home that night to lay off the toe and ice up, but Henry went out to see War Twins at The Viper Room and reported they were mighty good—as evidenced by this man’s enthusiasm in the video below.
While he was out I rewatched Pedro Almodovar’s Volver. This is one of my favorite movies and aside from it’s themes of family and death it also tackles sexual abuse. After everything this week I thought watching this might help. The film is beautiful; one of Almodovar’s best. Penelope Cruz executes her role so perfectly. I encourage you to watch!
Oh, and we’ve just added a very last minute show on October 25. Henry and I will be doing a stripped down set at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood at 7:15pm, just before our good friend Young Mister hits the stage. If you’re around, come say hello.
